I got to work with Tommy Davidson this past weekend. We did six shows together and he is by far, the nicest headliner I’ve ever worked with. Backstage, we sang all of SWV’s greatest hits together, and I BEGGED him to let me videotape him imitating Coco, but he wouldn’t budge. He told me some juicy celebrity gossip and I have a lot of funny stories about Tommy. If you ever see me in person, ask and I’ll tell you them.
He started doing stand-up in a Washington DC strip club. Tommy’s friend, the owner, encouraged him to perform one night a week. Soon he gained a following, moved into the comedy clubs, opened for Patti LaBelle, Luther Vandross, and a bunch of other great music acts. He didn’t want to talk a lot about In Living Color and I can definitely understand why.
I couldn’t find his legendary Sammy Davis Jr. impression on youtube, but these two clips totally bring back early 90s memories.
