Asian-American literature has needed a serious makeover for a long time…a salycitic acic face peel if you will. I never identified with the warrior, the jade and the first-quality crab.
“Unaccustomed Earth” captures my own experience with diaspora, better than any book I’ve ever read…except for “Catfish and Mandala.” The short stories are longer than those in “Interpreter of Maladies.” And they’re just as good, if not better.
